More people are turning to professional coaching to sharpen skills, reach leadership milestones, advance their careers, and build confidence. Depending on the coaching style, professional coaching can also be effective in other areas of life.
Why is professional coaching needed?
Are you looking to advance in your career? You need valuable skills, not only work skills to do the job, but also interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills. You must be able to communicate with clients, coworkers, and leadership within your organization.
Professional coaching is an effective option for leveling up in your career as well as other areas of your life. For example, someone might choose professional holistic and transformational coaching to gain the skills needed to assume a managerial position and improve their health and relationships.
Types of Professional Coaching
Several types of professional coaching are available, depending on your business goals. Before you choose a counselor, think about your career goals.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- What are my goals?
- Where do I see myself in one year? Five years? Ten years?
- Do I want to seek a leadership role?
- Do I need to learn more skills?
- How can I improve my performance?
- Do I do better in an individual or group setting?
- Would I benefit from virtual coaching?
- What do I need to do for my long-term success?
Once you have a list of goals and needs, survey the types of professional coaching available.
Leadership (Executive) Coaching To advance into a leadership role, you need specific skills and a change in mindset. Leaders serve others while growing and scaling a business. Leadership coaching, also referred to as executive coaching, seeks to help leaders manage more responsibility and stay confident to achieve company and personal goals.
Performance Coaching To achieve more in your business, you need to work with diligence, excellence, and a productive work ethic. You want to work smarter, not necessarily harder. Workaholism can tear relationships apart. Performance coaching can teach you the skills to level up in your career in less time without sacrificing the things vital to you.
Team (Group) Coaching Many businesses choose team or group coaching. This type of coaching teaches you how to communicate with others, problem-solve as a team, and resolve conflict. Team or group coaching is typically a more affordable option, as the coach can work with many people at once.
Virtual Coaching Virtual coaching is a convenient option for busy individuals. You can schedule your sessions around your work hours and attend a coaching session from home or the office. Depending on the coach and your needs, the coaching may be one-on-one or in a group format.
With so many types of professional coaching available, you are bound to find one that helps you achieve your goals.
Professional Coaching Styles
The professional coaching style you choose is just as important as the type. The style you choose should help you meet your specific goals. As you reach goals, you may want to introduce another style.
For example, as a beginner in coaching, you may feel more comfortable having the coach create and guide the structure. However, once you reach a few goals, you may want to add your input and make decisions in the structure and deadlines of your coaching milestones.
There is no right or wrong style. The professional coaching style you choose will be based on your personality, experience with coaching, and goals.
Autocratic The coach guides and structures deadlines without the client’s input. The coach makes the decisions and sets goals.
Democratic The coach, client, and any team members make the decisions and set the goals and deadlines. A client may be accountable to their peers and the coach, but the professional coaching style can be less strict than autocratic.
Holistic This type of coaching centers on the client’s well-being. It addresses the physical, mental, spiritual, relational, and business aspects of a person’s life to help them stay balanced and succeed.
Transformational Transformational professional coaching addresses the shift in mindset needed to be successful in business and life. It delves into the client’s reasons and perspective on goals and brings a form of holistic coaching to managing limited beliefs and negative self-talk.
